Yes, marijuana is safe. It is probably the safest, best medicine available.
Seeing as marijuana has never caused a single death, that's right, 0 deaths, I would have to then reason that it is not dangerous. The link below has charts of marijuana vs 17 pharmaceutical drugs and the death rates associated with each drug.

Yes, we absolutely have been lied to about marijuana! Propaganda has been spread against it, and then the War on Drugs came about. The government and anti-marijuana groups have spread a lot of mass misinformation and misinterpretation, as well as imposing mass incarceration and imprisonment, especially on minorities, when the real focus all along should have been on really studying these substances and getting help to addicts in the form of rehab.
Imprisonment for possession of a plant is absurd. Imprisonment for substances like meth amphetamines or heroin are much more understandable when it comes to having large quantities, but for the small amounts addicts buy, it just doesn't seem reasonable to do anything like locking them up instead of giving them help in rehab to fight their addictions.
Marijuana is being proven to majorly reduce opioid addiction, and is helping more and more addicts take control over their lives! In states with medical marijuana, deaths caused by pain killer addiction are on the decline by about 25%.
